Conan the Barbarian Movie Quote

by Craig
(St. Paul, Minnesota, USA)

Conan the Barbarian, when asked "What is best in life?"

"To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!"

This line was likely written by the screenplay writers John Milius and Oliver Stone

This movie quote, aside from being a hilarious paraphrase from some Mongolian conqueror of the factual past, begs us to examine our own idea of "What is best in life?"

If you ask yourself this question and your answer involves things you wish for but do not have, you must then ask yourself, "What must I do to pursue what is best in life?" There is no sense in going about in misery. Chase the things that really matter to you, and if you already have what matters don't be afraid to relax and enjoy life.

Because most of us are not barbarians or Mongol conquerors our answers to "What is best in life?" will likely involve things that cause less misery to others, and I suspect that is a good thing. You might say, "Friends, Family, and Community." or "Spending days out at the lake, fishing and drinking cold ones."

Your answer to the question "What is best in life?" will likely change from time to time, so take the time to ask yourself this question with some frequency.
