Picture of a Loving Couple
My favorite Bible quote...
"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth."
--1 Corinthians 13:4-6 ESV
This Bible verse is dear to me twice over.
I first favored it after leaving (yet) an(other) abusive relationship. After several years absent from church, I slowly returned to Bible study while trying to regain my psychological and emotional composure in the aftermath of this relationship.
I was still having difficulty reconciling the concept of "spousal abuse doesn't equate with love". When I read this passage, it was a moment of clarity in which I realized the words "I love you" are hollow when they are backed by violence and arrogance, spite and cruelty.
Later, when I met a truly wonderful man, it took on new meaning for me. It helped me recognize and realize that he shows genuine love for me, in his actions as well as his words. But it also helped me recognize the correct way of treating and responding to this incredible person in my life, when I had never been offered any prior examples of what to do.
There is much truth to this Bible verse, and I allow it to guide me daily in my relationships.
